In this zombie infested dark comedy, six friends escape the modern world and their day-to-day responsibilities as husbands, fathers and boyfriends, for a two-week bender in a rustic cabin on Mantrap Lake in the middle of nowhere Minnesota. Devoid of any contact with civilization, they are blissfully unaware that the zombie apocalypse has begun while they’ve been gone, and now half of North America is filled with the walking dead.

Now they must survive the onslaught of undead creatures, mutated wildlife, and each other to find a way to reach their loved ones, whom may or may not still be alive.

Mantrap eBook R Brandon Andersen

Mantrap covers the trials of a group of old friends who meet for a week of partying. As they are going wild, the zombie holocaust brings down civilization.

This book is entertaining as a zombie survival novel, but I would not define it as a dark comedy. Perhaps I have an odd sense of humor, but I did not find a lot of laughs in the situations or dialogue. The dialogue can be somewhat stilted at times, and several characters can be flat out annoying at others.

Conversely, the action and adventure of this book is pretty good for a book like this. The pace keeps cracking along once it gets going, and does not let up much. The descriptive writing is also well done.

For me the biggest issue with this however so that the characters are not differentiated enough to really tell them apart much beyond Stoner, Jerk, Jock, etc. When you don't put weight behind the characters sometimes it becomes an issue of people not becoming emotionally invested enough in them surviving. I would have liked to see more use of the different types of zombies as well.

Overall, an entertaining effort, but could use some refining.

Mantrap eBook R Brandon Andersen Reviews

Great book. someone should make a movie . typical guys , fartin, drinkin beer and shootin some zombies. loved it!!!!!
I loved the interaction between the guys. It was hysterical! To me the funniest part was where they were trying to save the beer in the shopping cart while running from the zombies. I could see guys actually doing that. There was no big explanation about how the virus happened, there was a lot of confusion which would happen.

My only problem was the bears and that maniac. Please don't just toss things in without some sort of reasoning within it. Not even when they ran into the military at the end there was still no account about that.

Other than that and a few minor typos it was a good book. Kudos!
I really liked this book. There were a lot of zombie action through out the whole book. The characters were great and a really good story.
I liked the idea that it was a group of guys who deliberately go out of the reach of telecommunications and thus miss the beginning of the Apocalypse. At times the banter was maybe too light in the face of what would be a very serious situation but I did like it.

I also want to purchase the second book.
I stopped reading and it was a bunch of men in the woods and that is as far as I could read started out slow and stayed slow for chapter after chapter
This was a great comedy/zombie (zombedy?) book. I love reading zombie books, and even more so when they feel real. This book had me laughing out loud more often than not. I imagine this is very much like what would happen if I was at a cabin with my friends and a zombie apocalypse broke out. I read this book the first time in one sitting and recently read it again. I can't recommend it enough! I only have a few problems with the book, so maybe a few spoilers following.

One, why didn't Jeff and Will shoot Strick immediately? It seemed obvious they should have. Two, the sexual tension between Brogan and Will was palpable, even though they supposedly had significant others. It was also blatant between Brogan and Dustin. Three, Pete seemed like he probably was super great looking. And last, I just wanted to mention that Jeff seemed like despite his character flaws, he was the rock keeping that group together and my personal favorite character.
I found this to be a very good Read because it's written in a very straight forward manner without lots of writing about which guns and ammo is being used, what walls had to be built, etc. Just a group of guys who went on a two week "guys" retreat and return to the zombie apocalypse!! Oh yeah, they do rescue two females, one of which is very attractive and of age, so that's some spice in the pot. Good story.
